Is Penrose Oakland Trying To Put The Alley Out Of Business?
For decades The Alley was and is known for its live music. The top attraction has been the legendary Rod Dibble. Rod has played the piano at the bar and restaurant at 3325 Grand Avenue since 1963. But now a new restaurant called Penrose has owned right next door. First the combination of its high end food and The Alley's entertainment worked well for both places. Then Penrose started having its own live music. Some have told me that while The Alley has a music license, Penrose does not. I have not checked this. But I have noticed that the later hour crowds at The Alley have really decreased after 11 on Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile Penrose is still going strong.
